Before you read: what people ask us most

Q Do you speak English?

A Consultations are conducted in Japanese, and we use translation tools to support English-speaking patients. If you would feel more comfortable with an interpreter or a Japanese-speaking companion, you are welcome to bring one.

Q Can I use Japanese health insurance?

A No. Every treatment on this page is self-pay (jiyu-shinryo). Japanese National Health Insurance and public subsidy programmes do not apply, so you pay the full amount shown.

Q Do I need to bring my insurance card or residence card?

A An insurance card is not required, precisely because these treatments are self-pay. Please bring photo ID. If you are unsure what to bring for your situation, tell us in the booking form and we will confirm before your visit.

Q Will my employer or family find out?

A Because treatment is self-pay, no insurance claim is filed, so no statement of medical expenses is sent to your home or your employer. This is a men-only clinic.

Q How do I pay?

A We accept VISA, JCB, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club, as well as debit cards and cash.

Before anything else: this is hair reduction

Clinics in some countries market laser treatment as though hair will never return. That would not be an accurate description. Medical laser treatment is intended to reduce hair growth. Hair can regrow over time, and the number of sessions needed differs by body area and by person. We would rather you knew that before booking than after.

How it works

The laser reacts with melanin, the dark pigment in the hair. The energy converts to heat, which damages the tissue that produces the hair, and growth in that follicle is expected to reduce. Because the laser needs pigmented hair in the follicle to work, plucking and waxing must be stopped before treatment — shaving is fine.

The device we use

Treatment at our Shimbashi clinic is carried out with the Gentle LASE Pro, a medical laser device used for hair reduction. It is an approved medical device in Japan, and it is also cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration.

How often you come in

Sessions are spaced about one month apart. This follows the hair cycle: the laser acts on hairs that are in their growth phase, and spacing the sessions lets the next group of hairs reach that phase.

How long a single session takes, and how many sessions you are likely to want, both depend on the area being treated — a beard appointment is far shorter than a full-body one. The physician will give you a realistic estimate for your areas at the first consultation.

Booking rules

Cancellation

Three or more days before your appointment, there is no charge. Two days to one day before, 75% of the booked menu price. On the day, 100%. For course patients, a cancellation counts as one session used.

If you are late

Treatment is carried out only within your remaining reserved time, and the full booked price still applies, or one course session is counted as used.

Session time

Treatment time is limited per area. If pain makes treatment impractical, or a substantial delay would result, we may decline to treat that area without anaesthetic.

Risks and side effects

Laser hair reduction carries risks. Please read this section before booking.

Burns and inflammation

The heat that damages hair-producing tissue can also leave the skin in a burn-like state and cause inflammation.

Paradoxical hair thickening

Hair can become thicker after treatment. The cause is not fully understood, but heat insufficient to destroy the hair-producing tissue is thought to stimulate the follicle instead. It is reported more often on the back and face, where fine vellus hair is common and heat is harder to concentrate.

Folliculitis

Acne-like bumps can appear in the treated area. This is more likely where sebaceous glands are dense — the intimate area, underarms and back. Unlike acne it usually neither itches nor hurts. Keeping the area clean is usually enough, and an ointment can be prescribed.

What to expect afterwards

  • Redness and swelling vary between individuals but usually settle within one to two days at most.
  • Treated hairs are shed naturally over about two weeks. Shave during this period rather than pulling hairs out.
  • Do not use tweezers or wax before treatment.
  • Moles react to the laser and may temporarily darken. We can treat around them on request.
