How Many Sessions of Medical Laser Hair Removal Until Results? By Body Area

With medical laser hair removal, you can expect to see noticeable hair reduction after roughly 5–8 sessions (about 1 to 1.5 years), while achieving a completely smooth, hair-free result takes around 10–15 sessions (about 2 to 3 years). Because of the hair growth cycle, only about 20% of your hair (the hairs in the anagen phase) can be effectively treated in a single session. “How many sessions does laser hair removal take?” “How many sessions are needed for the beard, full body, VIO, and underarms?” “When will I start seeing results?” — In this physician-supervised article, we explain the number of sessions required, the treatment period, and when you can expect to see results, broken down by body area.

How medical laser hair removal works

How medical laser hair removal works

Medical laser hair removal works by directing laser light at the melanin pigment in the hair to generate heat, which destroys the cells of the hair root (hair follicle). Once the follicle is destroyed, hair regrowth is suppressed, resulting in long-term hair reduction.

In a single treatment, the laser is only effective on hairs that are in the “anagen” (growth) phase of the hair growth cycle (about 20% of the total). The remaining 80% are in the catagen (transitional) or telogen (resting) phase, and because the laser’s heat cannot reach the hair root, those hairs are not affected at that point. For this reason, multiple sessions are required, and by attending at intervals matched to the hair growth cycle (every 4–8 weeks), all of the hair can eventually be treated.

The hair growth cycle and how it affects treatment efficiency

Hair repeats a cycle of anagen (growth) → catagen (transitional) → telogen (resting). At any given time, only about 20–30% of hairs are in the anagen phase, and medical laser hair removal is only effective on these growth-phase hairs.

In other words, the process of “treat once → wait 4–8 weeks → treat again once the next batch of anagen hairs has grown in” is repeated to target all of the hair.

When will you start seeing results?

Seeing results from medical laser hair removal

Here is a rough guide to when you can expect to see results from medical laser hair removal.

Session What to expect
Session 1 Within 1–2 weeks, the treated hairs gradually fall out (temporary)
Sessions 2–3 Hair volume and thickness gradually decrease; hair starts to feel finer
Sessions 4–5 Clearly noticeable hair reduction; shaving needed less often
Sessions 6–8 Substantial hair reduction; almost completely smooth in some areas
Sessions 10–15 Completed to the point where shaving is no longer needed (beard, VIO, etc.)

Sessions needed by body area

Sessions needed by body area

Because hair thickness, density, and depth vary from one body area to another, the number of sessions required also differs significantly.

Body area For hair reduction For fully smooth Estimated period
Beard (upper lip, chin, under-chin) 5–8 sessions 10–15 sessions 1.5–3 years
Full body (excl. face and VIO) 5–6 sessions 8–10 sessions 1–2 years
VIO 5–8 sessions 10–15 sessions 1.5–3 years
Underarms 4–5 sessions 6–8 sessions 1–1.5 years
Arms & legs (for thick hair) 5–6 sessions 8–10 sessions 1–2 years
Chest & abdomen 5–6 sessions 8–10 sessions 1–2 years
Back 6–8 sessions 10–12 sessions around 2 years

Why the beard and VIO take more sessions than other areas

The beard and VIO have thick hair, deep roots, and dense growth, so the laser is less effective there and more sessions are required than for other areas. By contrast, the underarms and arms have relatively fine, sparsely distributed hair, so you can see a major change in fewer sessions.

In addition, the beard and VIO are prone to reactivation due to the influence of male hormones, so some people see a slight return of hair after finishing treatment. If you are aiming for complete hair removal, it is realistic to budget for around 15 sessions.

Treatment interval and total treatment period

As a rule, treatment should be done once every 4–8 weeks to match the hair growth cycle. Too short an interval reduces effectiveness, while too long an interval throws off the hair growth cycle and becomes inefficient. The optimal pace varies by body area.

As a rough guide, a 5-session plan takes about 1 to 1.5 years, 10 sessions about 2 years, and 15 sessions about 3 years. The key to sticking with treatment is to attend at a comfortable pace that fits your work schedule and budget.

At your free consultation, a physician will assess how many sessions you’ll need for each body area. Available in Shimbashi, Akihabara, and Omotesando, with pay-per-session options.

Why some people need more sessions than others

Even for the same body area, the number of sessions needed varies from person to person. The main factors are as follows.

Tips and precautions to maximize results

To get the most out of as few sessions as possible, the keys are attending in sync with the hair growth cycle and managing your skin condition.

Medical laser vs. salon (IPL) hair removal vs. at-home devices

As we explain in detail in the differences between medical hair removal, salon hair removal, and at-home hair removal devices, there is a large gap in both effectiveness and the number of sessions needed to finish.

Method Power Sessions needed (beard) Durability
Medical laser hair removal Strong 10–15 sessions Long-term hair reduction (essentially permanent)
Salon light-based hair removal (IPL) Weak 20–30+ sessions Hair growth suppression / temporary reduction
At-home hair removal device Weakest 30+ sessions Hair growth suppression only; ongoing use required

Only medical laser hair removal performed at a medical institution can be described as “permanent hair removal.” With salon and at-home devices, hair regrows, so regular treatment is required.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1. After how many sessions will I notice results from medical laser hair removal?

There is individual variation, but many people notice clear hair reduction from around the 3rd to 5th session. Even after the first session you’ll see the treated hairs gradually fall out, but this is only temporary.

Q2. How many sessions does full-body hair removal take to become smooth?

Full-body hair removal excluding the face and VIO reaches an almost completely smooth level in 8–10 sessions, and you can experience substantial hair reduction in as few as 5–6 sessions.

Q3. How many sessions does beard hair removal take to become completely smooth?

Because beard hair is thick and deep-rooted, expect 10–15 sessions if you want a completely smooth result. If you only want to clear up a “five o’clock shadow” or reduce hair, you can see results in 5–8 sessions.

Q4. Will going more frequently make treatment more effective?

Going at short intervals while ignoring the hair growth cycle will not improve results. It only adds more stress to your skin. Every 4–8 weeks is standard.

Q5. Can the whole body be treated in a single visit?

It depends on the clinic, but in many cases the entire body can be treated in a single visit (taking 2–3 hours). Some clinics split treatment by body area.

Q6. How long do the results last?

Medical laser hair removal can be expected to provide long-term hair reduction, with the reduced state maintained for years (on the order of 5–10 years). However, due to the influence of male hormones, the beard and VIO may see a slight return of hair after several years.

Q7. What should I do if I’m not seeing results?

If you’ve had 3–5 treatments and still don’t see results, switching the laser type (heat-accumulation/diode ↔ heat-destruction/selective photothermolysis) or adjusting the settings can help. Talk to your clinic.

Q8. How much does it cost to add sessions after completing a course?

It depends on the clinic, but additional sessions after a 5-session course typically cost about 5,000–20,000 yen each. At clinics that offer pay-per-session, you can pay one session at a time from the start.

Q9. What’s the difference between medical hair removal and salon hair removal?

Medical laser hair removal is a medical procedure that destroys the hair follicle, so it delivers long-term results, whereas salon light-based hair removal uses low power and only suppresses hair temporarily, after which it regrows. Permanent hair removal can only be provided at a medical institution.

Q10. About how much does full-body hair removal cost in total?

A 5-session course typically costs 200,000–300,000 yen. Adding VIO or the face increases the cost further. See also the cost of beard hair removal.
