Before you read: what people ask us most
Q Do you speak English?
A Consultations are conducted in Japanese, and we use translation tools to support English-speaking patients. If you would feel more comfortable with an interpreter or a Japanese-speaking companion, you are welcome to bring one.
Q Can I use Japanese health insurance?
A No. Every treatment on this page is self-pay (jiyu-shinryo). Japanese National Health Insurance and public subsidy programmes do not apply, so you pay the full amount shown.
Q Do I need to bring my insurance card or residence card?
A An insurance card is not required, precisely because these treatments are self-pay. Please bring photo ID. If you are unsure what to bring for your situation, tell us in the booking form and we will confirm before your visit.
Q Will my employer or family find out?
A Because treatment is self-pay, no insurance claim is filed, so no statement of medical expenses is sent to your home or your employer. This is a men-only clinic.
Q How do I pay?
A We accept VISA, JCB, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club, as well as debit cards and cash.
Is this you?
- You shave every morning, and by the evening the shadow is back.
- Shaving daily has left the skin around your chin and neck sore or broken out.
- Ingrown hairs and razor bumps keep appearing along the jaw.
- You want the beard thinned or reshaped rather than removed entirely.
- You have tried a salon and found the results did not hold.
What medical beard laser hair removal does
A medical laser is directed at the melanin in the hair. The heat this produces damages the structures that grow the hair, so that regrowth is reduced over a course of sessions.
Because a medical clinic can use a higher output than a salon, the hair matrix is deactivated rather than temporarily weakened, and the reduction is long-lasting. Beard hair is dense and coarse, so several sessions are needed.
Alexandrite laser treatment is also reported to improve the appearance of enlarged pores.
The laser we use
Gentle LASE Pro
An alexandrite laser approved by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, well matched to the dark, coarse hair typical of Japanese skin. It is installed at the Shimbashi clinic.
The same machine throughout
The device does not change partway through your course, so sessions stay consistent.
Pay-as-you-go or a course
Single sessions and multi-session courses are both available, and a reduced rate applies once a course is completed.

What the appointment involves
Numbing cream
If you want numbing cream, book it in advance. You apply it yourself, and the session begins once it has taken effect. Numbing cream is ¥3,000 for the whole face. An additional charge applies if you want more than the standard amount.
Shaving beforehand
Shave the area yourself before you come. If the clinic shaves it for you, a charge of ¥2,000 per area applies. Where insufficient shaving makes treatment impossible, that area cannot be re-treated later in the same session, so please shave thoroughly.
Time limits per area
Each area has a set treatment time. If pain makes the session unworkable, or would cause a substantial overrun, we may decline to continue on that area without numbing cream.
Discomfort
This varies between individuals. It is commonly described as being flicked with a rubber band. Any redness or swelling afterwards usually settles within one to two days.
Side effects
Laser hair removal carries side effects. The following can occur.
Burns and inflammation
The laser reacts with the melanin in the hair and produces heat. That heat can leave the skin in a burn-like state and cause inflammation.
Paradoxical hair growth
Hair occasionally becomes thicker after treatment. The cause is not fully established, but heat that fell short of destroying the growth structures is thought to stimulate the follicle instead. It is said to occur more often on areas with fine hair, such as the back and parts of the face.
Folliculitis
Treatment can irritate the skin so that spots resembling acne appear across the treated area. This is folliculitis, and it is more common on areas with many sebaceous glands. Unlike acne it is usually free of itching or pain and has no central core. Keeping the skin clean is normally enough; an ointment can be prescribed if you are concerned.
Before and after treatment
Do not pluck or wax
The laser reacts to the dark pigment in the hair, so there must be hair in the follicle for treatment to work. Stop plucking and waxing before a course; shaving is fine.
Shedding after a session
Treated hairs are shed naturally over about two weeks. During that time the stubble can look like dark dots. Shave as normal and do not pull the hairs out.
Moles
The laser reacts to dark pigment, so it reacts to moles as well. A mole may darken temporarily and then fade, or disappear. Treatment can be carried out avoiding moles if you prefer; please raise it at the consultation.
Shaping the beard
The beard can be shaped rather than removed completely, and eyebrows can be shaped as well. Tell us what you want at the consultation.
