HAIR LOSS (AGA)
AGA Hair Loss Treatment for Men in Tokyo | English Support at Shimbashi

Before you read: what people ask us most
Q Do you speak English?
A Consultations are conducted in Japanese, and we use translation tools to support English-speaking patients. If you would feel more comfortable with an interpreter or a Japanese-speaking companion, you are welcome to bring one.
Q Can I use Japanese health insurance?
A No. Every treatment on this page is self-pay (jiyu-shinryo). Japanese National Health Insurance and public subsidy programmes do not apply, so you pay the full amount shown.
Q Do I need to bring my insurance card or residence card?
A An insurance card is not required, precisely because these treatments are self-pay. Please bring photo ID. If you are unsure what to bring for your situation, tell us in the booking form and we will confirm before your visit.
Q Will my employer or family find out?
A Because treatment is self-pay, no insurance claim is filed, so no statement of medical expenses is sent to your home or your employer. This is a men-only clinic.
Q How do I pay?
A We accept VISA, JCB, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club, as well as debit cards and cash.

What AGA is, briefly
AGA stands for androgenetic alopecia, the most common form of hair loss in men. It is progressive, which is why the timing of a decision matters.
Testosterone is converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by an enzyme called 5α-reductase. DHT binds to receptors in the hair follicle and shortens the growth (anagen) phase of the hair cycle. Hairs are then shed before they have grown thick and long, and over time the hair in the affected area becomes finer. Treatment works on this pathway: finasteride inhibits 5α-reductase, while minoxidil acts on the follicle to support growth.

Risks and side effects
Initial shedding (minoxidil)
Shedding often increases shortly after starting minoxidil. Activation of the hair matrix cells is thought to push resting-phase hairs out. As a guide, this typically settles within one to two months, with new growth from around the third month. It is unsettling, but it is expected.
Swelling (oral minoxidil)
Oedema of the face and legs has been reported with oral minoxidil.
Increased body hair (oral minoxidil)
Because oral minoxidil circulates through the body, hair elsewhere may become longer or thicker.
Decreased libido (finasteride)
Observed in rare cases. In a one-year clinical study conducted in Japan, adverse reactions including abnormal laboratory values were reported in 4.0% of patients (11 of 276). The most common were decreased libido (1.1%, 3 patients) and erectile dysfunction (0.7%, 2 patients). Rarely, loss of appetite and general fatigue associated with hepatic dysfunction may occur; stop taking the medication and consult a physician if these appear.
Two things to know before you start
Blood donation. You cannot donate blood while taking these medications. Finasteride must be stopped for at least one month, and dutasteride for at least six months, beforehand.
Handling. Finasteride and dutasteride must not be handled by women who are or may become pregnant.
