“I take Vitamin C supplements but don’t feel any effect.” “Is there a more efficient method for clearer skin and fatigue recovery?” If you have these questions, High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy is gaining attention as a solution.

High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy is a cosmetic and wellness treatment that achieves blood concentrations unreachable through oral intake, with a wide range of expected benefits including skin brightening, improved skin quality, wrinkle prevention, fatigue recovery, and immune support. It is well known for being used by celebrities and athletes, and demand has been expanding alongside rising beauty consciousness among men.

On the other hand, you may have concerns or questions such as “Are the side effects safe?”, “I heard G6PD deficiency testing is required—why?”, or “Should I choose 25g or 50g?” In this article, we provide a comprehensive explanation from a clinic specializing in IV therapy covering the effects, dosing, side effects, and comparison with other IV therapies for High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy.

What Is High-Dose Vitamin C IV Therapy|Mechanism and Features

What Is High-Dose Vitamin C IV Therapy

High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy is a medical procedure that delivers a large amount of Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)—an amount that is difficult to obtain via supplements or food—directly into the vein through an IV drip. Typically, 25g to 75g of Vitamin C is used per session, which is several hundred times the amount of typical oral intake.

Originally, research began in the 1970s with American biochemist Dr. Linus Pauling and colleagues, and today it is widely used in cosmetic medicine, anti-aging medicine, and integrative medicine. By maintaining a high concentration through IV infusion, the following pharmacological effects can be expected.

  • Powerful antioxidant action: Neutralizes reactive oxygen species and suppresses oxidative damage to cells
  • Collagen production promotion: Activates collagen production in the dermal layer, maintaining skin firmness and elasticity
  • Melanin production suppression: Inhibits excessive production of melanin, the cause of dark spots and dullness
  • Immune function support: Activates white blood cell function and strengthens resistance to infectious diseases
  • Fatigue recovery: Supports adrenal function and increases stress tolerance

Differences Between Oral Intake and IV Administration

Vitamin C is a representative water-soluble vitamin and can also be taken via supplements and food. However, oral intake has a major limitation: “the upper limit of intestinal absorption”. When more than 200mg is taken at one time, the absorption rate drops sharply, and any excess is excreted through urine—meaning blood concentration cannot rise above a certain level.

In contrast, IV administration delivers Vitamin C directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive tract, allowing for high concentrations that are impossible to achieve through oral intake. Specifically, while oral intake of 1-2g results in a blood concentration of about 100-200 μmol/L, a 25g IV drip reaches approximately 15,000 μmol/L, and a 50g IV reaches 20,000 μmol/L or higher, according to reports.

This difference in blood concentration is what produces the unique pharmacological effects of IV therapy. Effects such as antioxidant action and collagen production promotion are believed to be insufficient unless a certain blood concentration is reached.

History and Medical Evidence of High-Dose Vitamin C IV Therapy

High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy began with research by Dr. Linus Pauling and Dr. Ewan Cameron in the 1970s on high-dose Vitamin C administration. Subsequently, research has continued at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), with pharmacological backing being established.

In recent years, High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy has been widely used in cosmetic medicine, anti-aging medicine, and integrative medicine, and has been adopted by medical institutions around the world. In Japan as well, it is offered by many clinics as elective (non-insured) medicine, and is becoming established as an option for cosmetic and health maintenance purposes.

Primary Benefits of High-Dose Vitamin C IV Therapy (Cosmetic and Health)

Benefits of High-Dose Vitamin C IV Therapy

High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy is a treatment expected to deliver diverse benefits in both cosmetic and health aspects. Here, we explain the primary benefits that are particularly noteworthy. Note that individual responses vary—some people feel immediate effects, while others experience the benefits gradually over several sessions.

Skin Brightening, Improved Skin Quality, and Wrinkle Prevention (Collagen Production Promotion)

The most popular benefit of High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy is its cosmetic effect. Vitamin C is an essential coenzyme for collagen synthesis, and maintaining a high concentration promotes collagen production in the dermal layer.

  • Skin brightening effect: Suppresses the function of the enzyme tyrosinase and inhibits melanin pigment production. Effective for preventing and improving dark spots, dullness, and pigmentation
  • Improved firmness and elasticity: Through collagen production promotion, skin firmness and elasticity improve. Also helps prevent nasolabial folds and wrinkles around the eyes
  • Pore tightening: Reduces the visibility of pores through sebum secretion control and astringent action
  • Improvement of acne and acne scars: Promotes healing of acne and prevents pigmentation through anti-inflammatory and tissue repair actions
  • Normalization of skin turnover: Regulates cellular metabolism and maintains a healthy skin cycle

Particularly for men, UV protection and moisturizing care are often inadequate, leading to a tendency for dark spots and dullness to be noticeable. High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy is also effective for these skin concerns specific to men.

Fatigue Recovery and Stress Reduction (Adrenal Function Support)

Vitamin C is also involved in the synthesis of the anti-stress hormone (cortisol) in the adrenal glands. Modern people who experience a lot of stress overuse their adrenal glands, which is thought to increase Vitamin C consumption.

By supporting adrenal function through High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy, many people experience the following changes:

  • Reduced chronic fatigue: Body feels lighter, mornings feel refreshed
  • Improved stress tolerance: Reduction of mental fatigue and anxiety
  • Improved sleep quality: Better sleep onset and deeper sleep
  • Increased concentration: Clearer mind, improved work performance

For those experiencing stress in work or personal life, regular High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy is helpful for both mental and physical conditioning.

Immune Support and Cold Prevention (Activation of White Blood Cell Function)

Vitamin C is known to enhance the function of white blood cells (particularly neutrophils and lymphocytes). High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy can be expected to support resistance to infectious diseases.

  • Cold and influenza prevention support: For prevention during seasonal changes and outbreak periods
  • Recovery from infections: Supports recovery when symptoms are already present
  • Maintenance of condition during susceptible periods: Before business trips, busy periods, or seasonal changes

If you feel that “I have been catching colds frequently lately” or “fatigue lingers,” consider High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy as an option for immune support.

Anti-Aging and Antioxidant Action

One of the main causes of aging and lifestyle-related diseases is “oxidative stress”. UV exposure, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, stress, and lack of sleep generate reactive oxygen species in the body, which damage cellular DNA and proteins, leading to accelerated aging.

High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy uses its powerful antioxidant action to neutralize reactive oxygen species and reduce cellular damage. This is expected to provide the following anti-aging benefits:

  • Slows the progression of skin aging (wrinkles, sagging, dullness)
  • Improves hair firmness and texture (also effective in combination with AGA treatment)
  • Maintains vascular youthfulness, reducing the risk of lifestyle-related diseases
  • Cellular-level anti-aging support

Differences from Oral Supplements and OTC Drinks (400x Blood Concentration)

Comparison of Blood Concentrations Between Oral Intake and IV Therapy

Many people wonder, “Isn’t it enough to take Vitamin C as a supplement?” but in reality, there is a maximum 400x difference in blood concentration between oral intake and IV therapy. This is a decisive difference that determines whether pharmacological effects can be exerted.

Differences in Blood Vitamin C Concentration by Method of Intake

Method of Intake Dose Blood Concentration (Approx.) Ratio to Oral Intake
Diet (citrus fruits, etc.) About 100-200mg/day About 50-70 μmol/L 1x
OTC supplements/drinks 1,000-2,000mg About 100-200 μmol/L About 2-3x
High oral intake 3-5g About 220 μmol/L (plateau) About 3-4x
High-Dose IV 25g 25g About 15,000 μmol/L About 200x
High-Dose IV 50g 50g About 20,000 μmol/L or higher About 300x or higher
High-Dose IV 75g 75g About 25,000 μmol/L or higher About 400x or higher

*Values are approximate and vary by individual body type and metabolism.
As shown, the greatest feature of IV administration is achieving blood concentrations absolutely unattainable through oral intake.

Why Oral Intake Has Limits

Orally consumed Vitamin C is absorbed in the small intestine via an active transporter called SVCT1. However, this transporter has a saturation phenomenon—once a certain amount is exceeded, no more can be absorbed.

Specifically, while absorption rate is 80% or more for doses up to about 200mg at a time, it drops to less than 50% with 1g intake, and to about 20% with 5g intake. The rest reaches the large intestine causing diarrhea, and is ultimately excreted as urine.

In other words, the reality is that even with high-dose supplements or drinks, most of it is not absorbed and is excreted. The only way to overcome this barrier is direct administration via IV.

Effective Combination with Supplements and OTC Products

Even when incorporating High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy, daily Vitamin C supplementation should still be obtained orally (through diet and supplements). The two are complementary, not competitive.

  • Daily baseline: Maintain basic in-body concentration with diet + Vitamin C supplements (500mg-1,000mg/day)
  • Regular boost: Achieve pharmacological effects with monthly 1-2 High-Dose Vitamin C IV sessions
  • Intensive care before events: IV therapy to improve skin condition before weddings, photoshoots, or important business meetings

This way, the ideal combination is “defensive” care daily through supplements and “offensive” care through IV therapy.

Recommended Treatment Frequency and Number of Sessions (Weekly 1-2 times / 6-Session Course)

Recommended Frequency for High-Dose Vitamin C IV Therapy

How many sessions of High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy are needed to see effects?” is a very common question. The conclusion is that the recommended frequency and number of sessions vary by purpose, so it is important to decide on the optimal plan in consultation with a physician.

Recommended Frequency and Sessions by Purpose

Purpose Recommended Frequency Initial Course Maintenance
Cosmetic (skin brightening / improved skin) Once a week 6 sessions 1-2 times/month
Fatigue recovery / stress relief Once every 2 weeks 4-6 sessions Once a month
Immune support Weekly (during outbreak periods) 4 sessions Once a month
Overall anti-aging Once every 2 weeks 6 sessions 1-2 times/month
Pre-event intensive care 1-2 times/week 3-5 sessions As needed

The standard plan adopted at many clinics is “once weekly x 6 sessions“. After feeling effects during this period, it is common to transition to monthly 1-2 maintenance sessions.

Are Effects Visible After Just One Session?

Does a single High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy session work?” is another common question. In conclusion, many people can feel fatigue recovery and skin tone improvement after just one session, but genuine skin improvement and anti-aging effects appear with continued treatment over multiple sessions.

  • Session 1: Many people feel lighter and notice skin tone improvement the next day
  • Session 3: Start feeling changes in skin texture and firmness
  • Session 6: Feel reduction of dark spots and improved skin quality from collagen effects
  • Continued maintenance: Maintain and improve effects over time

We welcome those who want to “try just one session.” We never push course contracts. First trying one session to see if it suits you is also a good choice.

Importance of Following Recommended Frequency (Risks of Overdose)

High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy is a highly safe treatment, but excessive frequency such as daily administration is not recommended. By maintaining a 1-2 times per week interval, you can maintain bodily balance while achieving maximum effects.

Risks of overdose reported include kidney strain from oxalate accumulation, electrolyte imbalance, and rarely hypoglycemic symptoms. It is important to always follow appropriate frequency under medical supervision.

Side Effects and G6PD Deficiency|Why Mandatory Screening Is Required

Side Effects of High-Dose Vitamin C IV Therapy and G6PD Deficiency

High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy is relatively safe, but mild side effects can occur. Additionally, there is a serious risk for those with a hereditary condition called G6PD (Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase) deficiency, so blood screening is always conducted at the first visit.

Main Side Effects of High-Dose Vitamin C IV Therapy

Side Effect Incidence Symptoms / Management
Thirst (dry throat) Relatively common Throat becomes dry during/after IV. Manage with adequate fluid intake
Frequent urination Relatively common Increased urinary frequency due to fluid volume. Temporary
Hypoglycemic symptoms Rare Dizziness, cold sweat, weakness. Prevent with pre-IV meal
Vascular pain / insertion site pain Occasional Can be reduced by adjusting IV speed
Diarrhea / abdominal discomfort Rare May occur with high doses. Manage with dose adjustment
Mild headache Rare Improves with fluid intake and rest

Most of these side effects are mild and temporary. Eating a proper meal before IV therapy can reduce the risk of hypoglycemia.

What Is G6PD Deficiency|Why Mandatory Screening Is Required

G6PD (Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase) deficiency is a hereditary condition in which a critical enzyme in red blood cells is genetically deficient. The prevalence in Japanese people is reported to be approximately 0.1-0.5%, but most people are unaware of it without testing.

If a person with G6PD deficiency receives High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy, there is a serious risk of “hemolytic anemia,” where red blood cells are destroyed. As this could be a life-threatening severe adverse effect, G6PD activity must always be measured by blood test before the first session.

  • Test details: Measurement of G6PD activity (blood test)
  • Time to results: Typically about 1 week
  • If normal: Can safely receive High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy
  • If deficiency is found: Cannot receive High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy, but low-dose IV or alternative therapies will be proposed

Clinics that “skip testing and provide IV immediately the same day” should be avoided from a safety management perspective. Men’s Care Clinic always performs G6PD testing at the first visit.

Those Who Cannot or Should Be Cautious About Receiving High-Dose Vitamin C IV Therapy

The following persons either cannot receive High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy or require thorough consultation with a physician in advance:

  • Those with G6PD deficiency: Contraindicated due to risk of hemolytic anemia
  • Those with severe renal dysfunction: Consultation needed due to risk of oxalate accumulation
  • Those undergoing dialysis: Generally cannot receive treatment
  • Those with heart failure: Large fluid volumes may strain the heart
  • Those with history of stones (especially calcium oxalate stones): Careful consultation with a physician required

Those with chronic conditions or taking medications must accurately declare all information at the first visit. Sharing this information is essential for safe treatment.

Dose-Specific Usage (25g / 50g / 75g)

Dose-Specific High-Dose Vitamin C IV Therapy

The common doses for High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy are three levels: 25g, 50g, and 75g. For those who are “not sure which dose to choose,” we explain the guidelines and recommended characteristics for each dose.

Characteristics of 25g, 50g, and 75g and Who They Are Recommended For

Dose Duration Main Purpose Recommended For
25g About 30-45 min Entry level for cosmetic / fatigue recovery / immune support First-timers / those wanting short sessions / cost-conscious
50g About 60-90 min Genuine skin improvement and anti-aging Those wanting clear cosmetic effects / continuous care
75g About 90-120 min Aiming for maximum pharmacological effects Those with strong fatigue / those wanting intensive care

25g|For First-Timers and Trial Sessions

25g is the most popular dose as the entry-level model for High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy. The duration is short at about 30-45 minutes, allowing easy sessions during lunch break or after work.

  • Optimal as a trial dose for first-timers
  • Relatively low burden on the body and lower risk of side effects
  • Good value, easy to maintain regular sessions
  • Versatile for cosmetic, fatigue recovery, and immune support purposes

For those who want to “first try it out” or “finish in a short time,” we recommend starting with 25g.

50g|Standard|Genuine Skin Improvement and Anti-Aging

50g is the optimal dose for those seeking genuine cosmetic and anti-aging effects. Blood concentration reaches 20,000 μmol/L or higher, a concentration at which pharmacological actions such as collagen production promotion and melanin suppression are fully exerted.

  • Popular as a skin improvement course for those concerned about dark spots, dullness, and wrinkles
  • Also effective for chronic fatigue and strong stress relief
  • The dose at which it is easy to feel “my skin has changed”
  • Duration is 60-90 minutes. Recommended for weekends or days with few plans

For those who want continuous cosmetic medical care, 50g is the most cost-effective option.

75g|Intensive Care|Aiming for Maximum Effect

75g is the largest dose among High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy options. Blood concentration reaches 25,000 μmol/L or higher, the concentration at which pharmacological action is most powerfully exerted.

  • As intensive care for those with strong fatigue or lethargy
  • Intensive skin care before events, weddings, or photoshoots
  • Measures for seasonal changes and periods of weakened immunity
  • Duration is 90-120 minutes. Choose days when adequate time is available

Since 75g also increases burden on the body, gradually raising the dose under physician judgment is recommended. Rather than starting with 75g immediately, it is safer to start with 25g or 50g to see how your body responds before moving up.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. Does High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy work after one session?

Many people feel lighter and notice skin tone improvement the next day even after one session. However, genuine skin improvement and anti-aging effects are typically experienced with continued treatment of around weekly x 6 sessions. Trying just one session is also a good option. For related skin treatments, please also see this article.

Q. Are Vitamin C supplements not sufficient?

Supplements and IV therapy have a maximum 400x difference in blood concentration. Supplements have an upper limit of about 200 μmol/L, while 75g IV reaches 25,000 μmol/L or higher. Pharmacological actions such as collagen production promotion and melanin suppression are first exerted at high concentrations unreachable through supplements. The ideal combination is supplements for daily use and IV therapy for regular boosts.

Q. Is the G6PD test really necessary?

Yes, you must receive it before the first session. If a person with G6PD deficiency receives High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy, there is a risk of severe hemolytic anemia. While the prevalence in Japanese people is rare at about 0.1-0.5%, it cannot be detected without testing, so it is mandatory for safety. “Clinics that skip testing” should be avoided.

Q. Which should I choose: 25g, 50g, or 75g?

For first-timers, we recommend starting with 25g. The duration is short, the body burden is low, and costs are kept down. Those seeking genuine skin improvement and anti-aging effects should consider 50g, while those with strong fatigue or wanting intensive care should consider 75g. Ultimately, the dose suitable for your purpose and condition is decided in consultation with a physician.

Q. Are there side effects? Is it dangerous?

Mild side effects such as thirst, frequent urination, and rarely hypoglycemia are reported, but they are all temporary and mostly not problematic. To prevent hypoglycemia, it is important to eat a proper meal before IV therapy. For those with G6PD deficiency, there is a risk of hemolytic anemia, so it is always confirmed with the pre-first-visit screening test. After testing, High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy can be considered a highly safe treatment.

Q. How often should I receive it?

While it varies by purpose, continuing weekly for about 6 sessions initially is standard. Many then transition to monthly 1-2 maintenance sessions. For cosmetic purposes, weekly is the guideline, while for fatigue recovery, every two weeks is recommended. Excessive frequency such as daily is not recommended. Find a frequency that suits you in consultation with a physician.

Q. What is the difference from Glutathione IV, Placenta IV, and Garlic injection?

High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy features wide-ranging effects of skin brightening, improved skin, antioxidant, and immune support. Glutathione (Shiratama) IV specializes in skin brightening, Placenta IV is for skin improvement and menopausal symptoms, and Garlic (Vitamin B1) injection’s main purpose is fatigue recovery. Since each has different purposes, combining them allows for more comprehensive cosmetic and health care.

Q. How much does it cost? Is insurance accepted?

High-Dose Vitamin C IV therapy is elective (non-insured) medicine and not covered by insurance. Per-session costs are approximately 8,000-15,000 yen for 25g, 15,000-25,000 yen for 50g, and 20,000-35,000 yen for 75g. Per-session unit costs drop significantly with course contracts. At Men’s Care Clinic, first-visit and follow-up fees are free, and first-visit campaigns are also offered.

Q. Can I exercise or bathe immediately after the IV?

Shower and bathing are possible from the same day, but we recommend avoiding intense exercise and long sauna sessions. Because the IV activates body metabolism, overexertion can paradoxically cause fatigue. Adequate fluid intake and rest after completion maximizes effects.

Q. Can I do consultations and bookings online?

Yes, Men’s Care Clinic offers online consultations. Pre-counseling via video call on smartphone or PC is possible, allowing you to ask the physician directly about the necessity of IV therapy, dose guidelines, and any concerns. Online consultations in advance smooth the flow during clinic visits. Note that the IV procedure itself requires an in-clinic visit.
