“Isn’t Dermapen a treatment for women?” “Does it really work on men’s acne scars and enlarged pores?” — questions like these are increasingly common from male patients.
In fact, Dermapen (microneedling) is a medical-aesthetic treatment that delivers especially strong results for male-specific skin concerns, and it is now actively offered at men’s clinics.
This article focuses on men and explains the effects, recommended number of sessions, downtime and cost of Dermapen in plain language.
If you struggle with shaving damage, acne scars or enlarged pores, please read to the end.
Table of Contents
Dermapen is a medical-aesthetic treatment that uses ultra-fine microneedles to create microscopic channels in the skin and activate its natural healing response.
By stimulating the dermis it promotes the production of collagen and elastin, accelerating skin renewal.
The current standard device, Dermapen 4, has 16 ultra-fine needles and the depth can be adjusted from 0.1 to 3.0 mm.
The physician selects the optimal setting for each patient based on the depth of acne scars and the condition of the pores.
At the same time, cosmeceutical ingredients (hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, growth factors and so on) can be delivered into the deeper layers of the skin, producing a synergistic improvement.
Key points:
1. Men tend to produce more sebum, so pores clog easily — a perfect match for Dermapen’s turnover-boosting effect
2. Daily shaving weakens the skin barrier, but Dermapen rebuilds it from the inside through new collagen
3. Acne scars and atrophic (crater) scars tend to be deeper in men because of androgen activity, yet Dermapen can reach down into the dermis where the damage lies
Because androgens such as testosterone increase sebum output, men’s acne tends to inflame deeper into the skin and leave crater-like atrophic scars behind.
By stimulating collagen formation in the dermis, Dermapen lifts these depressions from within and gradually smooths them out.
Acne scars that “nothing else has worked on” can still respond to a steady course of Dermapen treatment.

Men with high sebum output often struggle with enlarged pores and dark plugs of keratin and oil.
The new collagen produced after Dermapen tightens the skin surrounding each pore, making dilated and funnel-shaped pores far less visible.
Faster cell turnover also helps keep pores from clogging up again.
Shaving every day gradually erodes the skin’s barrier function. Many men live with chronic irritation, redness and dryness.
Dermapen’s regenerative effect resets damage that has built up for years, supporting healthier and more resilient skin.
As the production of collagen and elastin ramps up, overall skin texture becomes finer and firmness and elasticity return.
It is also a good option if your skin “looks tired” or you have noticed dullness.
Many men in their 30s and 40s now use Dermapen as part of their anti-aging routine.
Dermapen also helps with post-inflammatory pigmentation from old acne and with sun-induced dark spots.
Combining the procedure with brightening serums (tranexamic acid, vitamin C derivatives) often delivers stronger results.

The cornerstone of Dermapen treatment is a steady cadence of one session per month (every 4 to 6 weeks).
Collagen needs time to form and stabilize, so consistency matters more than intensity.
The table below shows the typical progress at each milestone.
Note: Sessions performed too close together overload the skin, while sessions spaced too far apart let the effect fade. An interval of 4 to 6 weeks is generally considered the most effective.
Deeper needle settings produce stronger results but also longer downtime — choose the right setting in consultation with your physician.
First-time patients often worry about how the appointment will unfold. Here is the typical flow at a clinic.
From consultation to going home it takes around 2 to 3 hours, and most patients are back at work the same evening or the next day.
STEP 1
The physician examines your skin in person and listens to your concerns regarding acne scars, enlarged pores or skin texture. Together you decide on the needle depth and on which serum (hyaluronic acid, growth factors and so on) to deliver. Your medications and any allergies are also confirmed.
STEP 2
To minimize discomfort, a topical anesthetic cream is applied to the entire face and left in place for around 30 minutes. Once it takes effect, the needle stimulus is barely perceptible. We strongly recommend the option to anyone sensitive to pain.
STEP 3
A physician or nurse treats the entire face with Dermapen 4. The chosen serum (hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, exosomes and so on) is applied while the microneedles deliver it into the deeper layers of the skin. Needle depth is fine-tuned per area for an optimized result.
STEP 4
After treatment, cooling and moisturizing care is performed to calm redness. You then receive instructions on home care (moisturizer, sunscreen) and book your next session about 4 to 6 weeks later.
“Long downtime would interfere with my work” — this is one of the concerns we hear most often from men.
Fortunately, Dermapen downtime is relatively short, and most patients return to normal daily life within about a week.
STEP 1
Right after the procedure your face is red and feels warm, similar to a sunburn. In most patients the redness subsides by the next day. At home, gently cooling the face with an ice pack helps. Apply a low-irritation moisturizer and keep the skin clean.
STEP 2
Skin renewal kicks in and you may notice dryness or light flaking. Strict moisturizing is the key to a fast recovery. Avoid scrubbing the face and stop any peeling skincare and retinoid products during this period.
STEP 3
Redness and dryness mostly subside, and many patients begin to feel softer skin and the glow that comes from new collagen. Continue using sunscreen daily.
STEP 4
Collagen and elastin remodeling progresses and visible changes become obvious. Patients commonly notice tighter pores and improved firmness, and prepare for the next session about a month after the previous one.
What to do:
– Most patients can go back to work the next day (a face mask easily covers any redness)
– Hold off shaving for at least 3 days after the procedure (electric shaver from day 3 to 4, manual razor from about one week)
– Avoid saunas and intense exercise for 3 days post-treatment
– Skip alcohol on the day of treatment and the day after, then resume gradually
– From the night of the procedure, use a low-irritation moisturizer, and apply sunscreen every morning starting the next day
– Do not use peeling agents or retinoid products for one week after treatment
Dermapen pricing varies between clinics and depending on which serums are used.
Use the table below as a benchmark and choose the menu that fits your concerns and budget.
Note: Dermapen is cosmetic-only treatment not covered by Japanese national health insurance, so prices vary across clinics.
Choosing a clinic with an introductory trial price or a multi-session bundle keeps the cost down and makes it easier to stay consistent. At our clinic the trial starts from JPY 5,000 (full face).
Dermapen is effective for many men, but it is important to understand the following drawbacks and contraindications before booking treatment.
Caution: If any of the following apply, please consult a physician in advance.
– Keloid-prone skin (scars that tend to overgrow)
– Treatment over active acne
– Metal allergy (the titanium needles may trigger a reaction)
– Coagulation disorders or use of anticoagulants
– Active skin infection (herpes, varicella in active phase)
– Pregnancy or breastfeeding
– Patients on isotretinoin or within 6 months of stopping it

A. Yes, Dermapen works just as well for men. It is particularly effective for male-specific issues such as acne scars, enlarged pores and shaving damage. Because the underlying skin biology hardly differs between sexes, men can expect results comparable to women.
A. Results vary, but most men notice clearer skin texture after 3 to 5 sessions. For acne scars and atrophic (crater) scars, plan on 5 to 10 sessions roughly once a month.
A. Redness and warmth last 24 to 48 hours after the procedure. Mild dryness and light peeling appear on days 2 to 3, and most patients are essentially back to normal within a week. Recovery time depends on the needle depth used and on individual skin type.
A. Most patients can return to work the next day. A face mask covers any residual redness, so even people with face-to-face roles are usually unaffected. If you have important in-person meetings, scheduling treatment for a Friday is a good idea.
A. Each session is typically JPY 15,000 to 30,000. Velvet Skin (combined with PRX-T33 mesopeel) runs about JPY 25,000 to 35,000. A 5-session course is usually around JPY 80,000 to 160,000. Many clinics also offer an introductory trial worth using.
A. Yes — pores respond well to Dermapen. Collagen-driven tightening of the surrounding skin shrinks dilated and funnel-shaped pores. Men with high sebum output tend to feel the effect particularly clearly, and most see noticeable change after about 5 sessions.
A. Hold off shaving for at least 3 days after treatment. An electric shaver is fine from about day 3 or 4, and a manual razor from about one week. The skin barrier is temporarily weakened, so any irritation can lead to inflammation or post-inflammatory pigmentation.
A. Treatment may not be possible for people with keloid-prone skin, active acne in the treatment area, metal allergies, coagulation disorders or who are on anticoagulants, during pregnancy, or within 6 months of stopping isotretinoin, among others. Always discuss your background at the pre-treatment consultation.
