What testing and treatment involve

Sexually transmitted infections are passed on through sexual contact, including oral sex. There are many of them, and the symptoms differ considerably — including between men and women. Some can lead to infertility later, or be passed from mother to child, so if a partner has been found to be infected it is important to be treated properly even when you have no symptoms yourself.

For urethritis, the usual test uses a urine sample that you provide in the clinic toilet. We use a kit that tests for gonorrhoea and chlamydia together, the two most common causes. Throat infection is also possible, and we can test for that as well — tell the doctor if it may apply to you. Where infection is confirmed, treatment can start the same day. Note that it is the sample that is taken on the day: laboratory results follow by LINE, in two working days at the earliest and four at the latest.

Important information about this treatment

• Self-pay treatment: testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections at this clinic are not covered by public health insurance and the full cost is borne by the patient. No insurance card is needed, so no notice of medical expenses is sent to your home or your workplace.
• Timing affects the result: every test has a window period during which an infection may not yet be detectable. If you were exposed very recently, tell the doctor, as a repeat test at a later date may be needed.
• A negative result is not a guarantee: it reflects the infections tested for, at the time of testing. If symptoms continue, come back rather than assuming the matter is closed.
• Treat partners as well: if only one person is treated, reinfection is common. Where a partner may be affected, they should also be tested.
• Finish the course: take the medication exactly as prescribed. Stopping early because symptoms have eased can leave the infection present and encourages resistance.
• Individual variation: symptoms, the course of infection and the response to treatment differ from person to person. Whether a test or a medication is appropriate is decided by the doctor at the consultation.

Coming as an English speaker

You can be seen here without speaking Japanese. There is no English-speaking doctor at the clinic: the consultation is handled with a translation app and a written intake form, which is usually enough for the doctor to decide on treatment. You are welcome to bring a Japanese-speaking companion or your own interpreter.

Shimbashi is served by five lines. Toei Asakusa Line Shimbashi Station and the Yurikamome Shimbashi Station are both within walking distance, so the clinic is easy to reach from any part of Tokyo.

Coming from Shiodome, Ginza or Toranomon

The Shiodome office district is within walking distance. Ginza, Toranomon and Kasumigaseki are one or two stops from Shimbashi Station.

Coming after work

We are open until 21:00 on weekdays. First visits are accepted up to 30 minutes before closing and follow-up visits up to 10 minutes before closing. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays we are open from 10:00 to 18:00.

If you are hesitating

I have no symptoms. Is it worth being tested?

Yes. Many sexually transmitted infections cause no symptoms at all, particularly in the throat. Testing to settle a worry is a perfectly good reason to come, and you can ask about a partner in the same consultation.

Will my family or my employer find out?

All treatment is self-pay and no insurance card is required, so no notice of medical expenses is sent to your home or your workplace. This is a men-only clinic, so you will not encounter female patients — though some men do attend together with a female partner.

Will I be examined intimately?

For the usual urethritis tests you provide a urine sample yourself in the clinic toilet. Where a rash or a lesion needs to be looked at, the doctor will explain first and ask your agreement.

It is awkward to explain what happened.

The doctor needs to know roughly when and what kind of contact took place in order to choose the right tests. Nothing is judged; the questions exist only to get the testing right.

Can you test my throat as well?

Yes. Gonorrhoea and chlamydia can infect the throat, so tell the doctor if that may apply to you.

Can I come if I have no symptoms?

Yes. Testing to settle a worry, even without symptoms, is perfectly reasonable, and you can raise concerns about a partner in the same consultation.

What does the test involve?

Is there a consultation fee?

The consultation fee is ¥0 where testing or treatment is carried out. If neither is carried out, the fee is ¥3,000.

What is included in the pre-marital screening?

Pre-marital screening is ¥29,800. A set of four blood tests — syphilis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and herpes — is ¥19,800.

Is a repeat test carried out after treatment?

Yes. Once enough time has passed we test again to confirm the infection has cleared. A repeat test after treatment is ¥7,800.
