Botox
Botulinum toxin (Botox®) injections are a medical aesthetic treatment that can address a wide range of concerns, including wrinkle improvement, facial slimming, body odor (osmidrosis), and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). This article provides an easy-to-understand, physician-reviewed explanation of how botulinum toxin (Botox®) works, along with its effects, side effects, duration, and frequently asked questions.
Table of Contents
Botox is a medical aesthetic treatment in which a refined protein (botulinum toxin) produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum is injected. By temporarily inhibiting muscle movement, it is effective for improving wrinkles, refining facial contours, and treating excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and body odor (osmidrosis).
Some people feel uneasy because of the name “botulinum bacterium,” but medical-grade botulinum toxin (Botox®) is a highly refined and diluted, safe pharmaceutical agent. It has been used worldwide for several decades and is one of the most established and safest treatments in aesthetic medicine.
Key Points
It is most effective for wrinkles (expression lines) caused by the repeated movement of the facial muscles.
Botox injections into the jaw muscle (masseter) can slim a protruding jawline and produce a facial slimming effect. They are also effective for improving clenching and teeth grinding, and in some cases can help reduce jaw pain and headaches.
For excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the underarms, palms, and soles, it has the effect of inhibiting the activity of the sweat glands. Because it also suppresses the function of the apocrine sweat glands that cause body odor (osmidrosis), it can be expected to improve odor as well.
By injecting Botox into the trapezius muscle (the muscle extending from the shoulders to the neck), improvement of chronic shoulder and neck stiffness can be expected. It is also popular as “shoulder Botox,” as it can make the shoulder line appear more refined at the same time.
The effects of Botox are not permanent and naturally return to the original state after a certain period.
It is widely reported that by receiving repeated treatments, muscle movement becomes habitually inhibited, and in many cases the duration of the effects becomes longer.
Botox is generally a highly safe treatment, but the following side effects and risks may occur.
Counseling
We listen to your concerns and wishes and propose the optimal treatment plan. We also carefully explain the side effects and risks.
Face Washing and Anesthetic Cream
We cleanse the treatment area and, if necessary, apply an anesthetic cream (about 20–30 minutes).
Injection
The agent is injected with a fine needle. The procedure time depends on the area, but it is completed in about 5–15 minutes.
Aftercare and Going Home
We explain the post-treatment precautions. There is almost no downtime, and you can go home immediately afterward.
Q. Is the procedure painful?
Because a fine needle is used, pain is minimal. By using an anesthetic cream, pain can be reduced even further.
Q. Is there any downtime?
In most cases, there is almost no downtime. Mild swelling or redness may appear at the injection site, but it improves naturally within a few hours to a few days.
Q. When can I feel the effects?
Effects begin to appear 3–7 days after the injection and stabilize in about 2 weeks. Please note that it takes a little time for the effects to reach their maximum.
Q. How many times should I receive it?
You can feel the effects even after a single session, but receiving it continuously every 3–6 months helps the effects last longer. In some cases, repeating the treatment lengthens the duration.
Q. Is it covered by insurance?
Botox for cosmetic purposes is not covered by insurance (self-pay treatment). However, for medical purposes such as excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), it may be covered by insurance in some cases. Please confirm the details with a physician.
Summary of This Article
