Information
Medical hair removal (medical laser hair removal) refers to hair removal treatments performed at medical institutions (clinics). A physician, or a nurse acting under a physician’s direction, uses a medical-grade laser to irradiate the hair root (dermal papilla), destroying the cells that grow hair and achieving permanent hair reduction.
Medical laser hair removal is also the only hair removal method approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for “Permanent Hair Reduction.” For this reason, it offers more than simple hair-growth suppression and delivers fundamental, long-lasting hair reduction. Another advantage is safety: should any skin trouble occur during treatment, a physician at the clinic can respond immediately.
Hair removal was once seen as something for women, but shifting attitudes have driven a sharp rise in demand among men as part of personal grooming and cleanliness. Reasons vary widely: eliminating the daily hassle of shaving, feeling more confident in swimwear when body hair is dense, or reducing sweat and body odor are just a few examples.
Key point: Medical hair removal does not mean “no hair will ever grow again,” but after the full course of treatments, hair can be reduced to a level where day-to-day care is essentially unnecessary. The long-term cost-performance is also excellent.
Hair removal treatments fall broadly into two categories: medical hair removal (at clinics) and IPL or flash hair removal (at beauty salons). Many people, however, choose without fully understanding the differences between the two.
| Medical Hair Removal (Clinic) | IPL Hair Removal (Salon) | |
|---|---|---|
| Practitioner | Physician / nurse | Esthetician |
| Equipment | Medical-grade laser (high output) | IPL / flash light (low output) |
| Effect | Permanent hair reduction (FDA-approved) | Temporary hair-growth suppression |
| Performance on coarse hair | Excellent | Limited |
| Response to skin trouble | Physician can respond immediately | Medical care not available |
| Cost per session | Slightly higher | Relatively low |
As shown above, medical hair removal tends to cost more per session than salon hair removal, but it is far superior in durability of results, performance on coarse hair, and safety. Many men in particular have dense body hair, so IPL salons often fail to deliver sufficient results, ultimately driving up the total cost as treatments continue indefinitely.
Swift Clinic Online Consultations
From your first visit, everything can be handled at home. Feel free to reach out for a consultation.
Medical hair removal clinics primarily use the following three types of lasers. Each has its own wavelength, delivery method, and hair types it handles best, so choosing a laser suited to your skin tone and hair type is essential.
Note: Recently, SHR (Super Hair Removal) thermal-cooling devices that combine multiple lasers have become widespread, and a growing number of clinics now offer treatments that minimize pain while handling a wide range of hair types. Confirm during your consultation which device best suits your skin and hair.
Hair removal results depend on the hair growth cycle (the hair cycle). Hair is always cycling through anagen (growth), catagen (regression), and telogen (rest), and lasers are effective only on hair in the anagen phase. Multiple sessions are therefore required to treat every hair.
| Area | Recommendation | Estimated sessions | Estimated duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full beard | ★★★★★ | 8-12 sessions | 1-2 years |
| Beard (partial) | ★★★★★ | 6-8 sessions | About 1 year |
| Chest / abdomen | ★★★★☆ | 5-8 sessions | 1-2 years |
| Back / shoulders | ★★★★☆ | 5-8 sessions | 1-2 years |
| Full legs | ★★★☆☆ | 5-8 sessions | 1-2 years |
| Full arms | ★★★☆☆ | 5-8 sessions | 1-2 years |
| VIO area (intimate area) | ★★★★☆ | 6-10 sessions | 1-2 years |
For anyone considering medical hair removal for the first time, we recommend starting with beard hair removal. The reason is that eliminating the daily chore of shaving creates immediate, tangible lifestyle benefits that help maintain motivation. Beard hair is also among the thickest and densest body hair, which makes it highly responsive to medical lasers and an area where results are easy to feel.
Medical hair removal costs vary by clinic, treatment area, and number of sessions, but the figures below are a general benchmark of typical market rates. Be careful, however: choosing on price alone risks ending up at a clinic with inferior equipment or inadequate physician support.
| Area | Per-session rate | Estimated course total |
|---|---|---|
| Full beard | JPY 5,000-15,000 | JPY 50,000-150,000 |
| Chest / abdomen | JPY 8,000-20,000 | JPY 60,000-160,000 |
| Back / shoulders | JPY 10,000-25,000 | JPY 80,000-200,000 |
| Full body (incl. VIO) | JPY 30,000-70,000 | JPY 200,000-500,000 |
| VIO only | JPY 10,000-25,000 | JPY 80,000-200,000 |
Key point: In most cases, medical hair removal costs are not eligible for medical expense deductions (when the purpose is cosmetic). However, many clinics offer free loans or installment plans, so consult with the clinic if paying the full amount up front is difficult.
Medical hair removal generally proceeds through the following four steps, from the initial consultation through to course completion. Because physicians and staff provide attentive support at every step, even first-time patients can begin with confidence.
STEP 1
Consultation and examination
A physician or counselor reviews the area you wish to treat along with your skin and hair type. Based on your desired outcome and budget, they will recommend the optimal treatment method, number of sessions, and course. Use this opportunity to ask any questions you have without hesitation.
STEP 2
Pre-treatment preparation (self-shaving and arrival)
Between the day before and the day of treatment, shave the treatment area yourself before visiting the clinic. If hair remains, heat concentrates on the surface hair and increases the risk of burns. Do not, however, pluck the hair or use depilatory creams, as these damage the hair root.
STEP 3
Laser irradiation
After applying gel to the treatment area, the medical-grade laser is fired. Treatment time varies by area: roughly 15-30 minutes for a full beard, and one to two hours for a full body session. You will feel a sensation similar to being snapped by a rubber band, but devices with built-in cooling significantly ease the discomfort.
STEP 4
Aftercare and next appointment
Some redness or warmth may occur after treatment, but in most cases it subsides within a few hours. The clinic will apply moisturizer and cool the area, then schedule your next session for one to two months later. Returning regularly in line with the hair cycle is the key to maximizing results.
After medical hair removal, the skin temporarily becomes more sensitive. Proper aftercare is therefore essential to prevent skin trouble and to enhance the effectiveness of your next session.
How to handle it: Folliculitis (small acne-like bumps) sometimes appears after treatment. This is a temporary inflammatory reaction that usually resolves on its own. If, however, symptoms worsen or spread over a wide area, contact the clinic immediately.
When selecting a medical hair removal clinic, choosing on price alone is risky. Be sure to also verify treatment quality, safety, and the support structure in place. Use the points below as a reference.

Q. Will medical hair removal eliminate all of my hair?
A. Medical hair removal aims for “permanent hair reduction,” not the complete elimination of every single hair. In general, after the course is complete, 80-90% or more of the hair is reduced, leaving the skin at a level where daily care is essentially unnecessary.
Q. How much does the treatment hurt?
A. Many patients describe the sensation during irradiation as being “snapped by a rubber band.” Some areas can feel sharply painful, but modern clinics use devices with built-in cooling and topical anesthetic creams to reduce the discomfort.
Q. When will I start to feel the effects?
A. Hair generally begins to shed about one to two weeks after treatment, and many patients notice a clear difference around the third or fourth session. Achieving the full effect typically requires 6-12 sessions.
Q. Can I receive treatment if I am tanned?
A. When the skin is tanned, the laser reacts with the increased melanin pigment, which raises the risk of burns and pigmentation. Many clinics therefore decline treatment on freshly tanned skin. Be diligent with sun protection both before and after treatment.
Q. Does it work on white or blond hair?
A. Medical hair removal lasers react with melanin pigment, so their effect on lightly pigmented hair such as white, blond, or vellus hair is limited. Have your hair type assessed during the consultation and decide on the feasibility and session count from there.
Q. What happens if I stop going partway through?
A. If you stop midway, the results achieved up to that point remain, but the remaining hair will continue to grow, leaving an unfinished appearance. If you are on a paid course, any remaining sessions will be handled according to the clinic’s policy.
Q. Does treatment interfere with work or daily life?
A. There is generally no significant downtime, and most patients can return to normal life the same day or the next day. We still recommend avoiding strenuous exercise and long baths on the day of treatment. Because sessions are short, many patients visit during work breaks or on their lunch hour.
Q. Can I have a medical hair removal consultation online?
A. Some clinics handle pre-treatment consultations and counseling online, but the actual hair removal treatment requires an in-person visit. Our clinic offers initial consultations online as well.
